Former Junta Leader Moussa Dadis Camara announces his candidacy for the presidential election

Conakry, Guinea (MAT)- Captain Moussa Dadis Camara, former junta leader who led Guinea from 2008 to 2009, announced on May 11 its intention to run for the next presidential in October in his country.

“I gladly accept to be a candidate in October 2015 presidential election in our dear fatherland common to all of us : Guinea,” Mr Camara said in Ouagadougou where he lived in exile since 2010.

“I am a Guinean foremost and nothing forbids me to return to my country,” added the former head of the state, without giving a specific date for his possible return.

Captain Moussa Dadis Camara, on the other hand, announced that it had agreed to become the leader and presidential candidate of the Patriotic Forces for Democracy and Development Party (FPDD). The leaders of this new formation had moved to Ouagadougou to ask the former junta leader to be president and the candidate for the highest office.

“I take today the destiny of the party which wants national unifier (…). This party must be neither ethnic nor discriminatory, “said the former president of Guinea, indicating that he plans to leave the Guinean armed forces to avoid conflicts of authority.

Camara headed the junta that took power in Guinea in late 2008, on the death of President Lansana Conté, before being the transitional president from 23 December 2008 to December 2009. It is particularly mentioned that in the killing of at least 157 opponents, on 28 September 2009 by soldiers during a peaceful demonstration in Conakry against his candidacy.

Shot in December 2009 by his aide de camp Aboubacar Sidiki Diakité said Toumba in Conakry Dadis Camara had settled for his convalescence in Burkina Faso where he has lived since.
